Hi John,
If you look to the left you'll find a column of links. The fourth blue one is labeled "Tutorials." Click that link and look for the "Standard 8051 Tutorial." You'll want to read Chapter 8, "Serial Port Operation," and the part of Chapter Nine that deals with "Serial Interrupts." Actually, you might want to read the whole thing.
