I suggest you will be better off using two power supplies a 'logic power supply' and a 'LED power supply'. My experience is not with 64 LEDs but thousands (I use up to a 100A LED power supply) and the current jolts when the display switches can be humongeous . This might make your uC 'burp'. Again, my experience is for LARGE displays, it may not matter with an 8*8.
