This is why for the ultralow power MCUs it's absolutely necessary to have wide supply voltage range, so that NO regulator is needed for example for battery-powered applications.

Atmel comes into mind in this respect... but not the '51s unfortunately :-(

PS. One more thing, the absolute winners in the low power quest will be ROM based devices, as the FLASH is a classical power-sucker.
