Again, it depends on exactly what you mean by "buffer" - it certainly is a buffer[1] in the (software) sense of a "temporary storage location"...

No doubt Intel were thinking of it as a "buffer" when they named this SFR "SBUF" - taking "BUF" as short for "buffer"...
