Reasons you have listed indicates to firmware bugs or power problems.

If the standby controller has same firmware & uses same power supply, then there is no guaranty that using standby controller will help. Second MCU also may hang due to same problem.

Rather removing bugs in the firmware is correct approch.
Also use watchdog as previous post has suggested.
