Actually, the original question was to see it they're "functioning OK" - which, I think, is a bit more than being not "dead as a doornail"...?
My whole point was that if you do not have what you need to get the full information, you must live with partial information: "A scope will tell you if you have the right thing a "pulse present indicator" will tell you if you have 'something' and then you must surmise if it is "the right thing"."
