Just by skimming your code I see something strange....

I have code for 16 bit reads and writes,
and there is a lot less of it.

There is only a fixed 8 bit shift out,
a fixed 8 bit shift in,
and a few calls to them.

There is no reason to do anything but 8 bit shifts.
