One could very easily control two side-by-side seven segment LED modules with just eight (8) port pins [seven for the digit drives and one for the digit selection]. This scheme would require a simple timer interrupt driven multiplex scheme to alternately drive the two digits of the display at a hundred Hertz or so. This could easily be the same timer interrupt used to count out the long delay.
