If it's in the NVRAM, it could be that the NVRAM is too slow. That shouldn't be the case, however, unless your 89C52 is very fast. The slowest DS1230's are 120 ns parts, which should be readily useable with properly connected 12-clockers, and even most 6-clockers. Could you tell us the exact and complete part numbers and clock (probably pin 19) frequency?

If the NVRAM (I use these DS1230's very often, even with one-clockers) is selected (via pin 20) using A15, and output-enabled (via pin 22) by /Rd, then the timing should be pretty generous even with the fastest ATMEL 89C52 types.

Are you using both MCU's in the exact same physical circuit?

Do you have an oscilloscope available?
