I remember when a U.S. national distributor (Avnet) was web-posting $1008 each in q10K for an FPGA that one of my associates had been buying right along at q100 $4.15 for a year or so.

As for the code comparison, I suspect that what's being compared is compiler output from similar 'C' code, which is not at all a reasonable comparison.
