I saw that product just recently in an look at the FTDI web site. I'm not so sure that I'd call the product bizarre. More on point I would think to call it a brilliantly clever idea. What one could maybe consider bizarre is the fact that internally the thing has a level translator (charge pump type) that produces RS232 compatible voltage behavior which turn around and get converted right back to TTL a few inches away on the hosting circuit board!!
