Contention protocol etc.
Most of the early RS-485 transmitters woild burn if they had to fight another transmitter on the same circuit. RS-485 can NOT be configured as multimaster if you follow the standard to the letter. A bastardized version J-1708 can be used in a multinaster configuration, but the balanced circuit has lost its balance and thus the noise immunity (the reason I love RS-485) is reduced.
