I believe by setting the REN bit in SCON it automatically takes the receive port pin to the correct state. Not to mention that FFh is the default condition for all ports, so writing a '1' to it shouldn't be strictly necessary--though it certainly isn't bad form.

Make sure you had that CLR TI in your code. If you don't then the most you'd get is a single character out, then nothing.
