I used acoustic couplers on a tty modem. Don't remember the baud rate. Later I used 300bps direct connect to dial out, on a modem I built, until I built a 1200bps version. I used that until the price of a purchased 1200bps modem dropped below the price of the solderless breadboards containing my version. Unfortunately, it used a Z80 processor.
