There is a very easy way to handle this: Be concerned about the environment, do not throw your old PC out. Load it up with DOS, network it to your downgraded Windows/Linux machine and use the old bugger for all response time critical operations. This becomes more and more important as the Gatesians and the Linuxians depart more and more from REAL real time.

An added advantage is that you have 2 monitors and can look at a source file and a list file at the same time.
