John, what you proposes is a usual way everybody uses in the industry. A good result will be obtained at a frequency of 100Hz and higher. The lower boundary of frequency may be estimated at 50Hz - flickering becomes visible. The only inconvenience is that the method is rather noisy - be attentive with your PCB.
