Why not use zero-crossing optotriac to drive a triac? When switching on zero-crossing, there won't be current spikes and the triac won't suffer a fast current (di/dt) slope. Also, drive the triac for full cycles.

You can use a MOC3041 optocoupler and a TIC226M triac (600V, 25A rms).
