Solid state relays (the croydom device mentioned) are usually zero volt switching ie. they switch on or off as the supply voltage goes thrpough zero, reducing switching interference, they can often be picked up vety cheaply from surplus stocists so can lcd's. I have written several interface s for these and many more are on web pages.
