Ijaz,

the atmel datasheet does say that ISP is possible. the atmel website also has a downloadable software called FLIP which performs ISP. then why isn't it possible to program the chip using ISP??? is it because AT89c51 is different than AT89c51Rx2. But i did not find any reference to AT89c51( it is always with those trailing Rxx) on the atmel website. any way the chip that i bought has the following markings on it
"AT89c51
24PC
0205"

so what have i bought???

please help!!
