I'll reply here, as I'm thinking specifically of the "Database" part:

I wonder just how much of a "Database" artos really wants - is he really after a true Database with SQL access, keys, tables, relations, etc, etc; or just a simple (though big!) log?
Database design & programming is, of course, a specialist subject in its own right - and I'd have thought that a Computer (PC, UNIX, whatever) was the best place to do it.

So, back to Artos: what functionality do you need from this "database?"
