I am using the Philips P89C51RD2 with no problems after following what I have stated here and here.
also DO use FlashMagic from www.esacademy to load your code, WinIsp works quite well but is prone to operator error.

I share your sentiment about Atmel not getting it right before revision 's' or some other high number. My preference for Philips is due only to their support and the fact that the chips actually work as the data sheet say.
