If it's a digital volume control you want, take a look at the AD8400ANxxx family of digital potentiometers from Analog Devices. Basically the chips contain 1, 2 or 4 8-bit digital 'resistors' which can be controlled by a micro using a simple SPI interface. REALLY EASY TO USE!!!!!!
