when driving a hitachi LCd controler off an 8051 the timing for the R/W line is not met if you generate LCD R/W and enable from the 8051 R/W lines. I connected the LCD R/W to an adress this complicates the LCD software but it works and should not be aproblem if your softawre is well structured.
