Diesel-electric engines have a diesel generator that drives an electric motor that drives the wheels.

The electric motors generate a very big magnetic field that can be detected by a coil hooked up to an amplifier circuit driving an A/D input.

I used this technique to detect and record the magnetic field of the engine for a project many years ago. At that time, the total parts cost was about $100.00 US.
