I vote for Daniel R. method - Subtraction. With a little thought this can be the best... unles my assumption about the number is wrong. Won't the number be fairly stable, unless the GPS is in a missile ?

If it's stable, then only the difference from the previous reading would have to be divided, giving much better accuracy. The slow subtractive method need only be done once in a while.
