If you are just driving the laser by its supply lines, I'm amazed its managing 300 baud ! You need to modulate the diode directly somehow - driving laser diodes can be tricky - very short current spikes can destroy the device instantly. I have never tried it, but I think Maxim do a laser diode driver with a modulate input.
