1) A LEDiode is a friggin diode, so whatever you apply, you will see a diode drop or a burnt out LED. It actually works to connect LEDs as you did sice port 2 has pullup resistors, if port 2 had active pullup (it HAS active pulldown) either th uC or the LED would have popped. So id low current LEDs (<5mA) only do as suggested above, otherwise use a LED driver chip or a transistor. If yoy want to drive LED and address, you will need a HC(T) chip to isolate the LED from the port pin.
