This is not a good choice to use an LDO that is surface mounted like this. One generally will use an LDO to support a design like this when the input voltage range is limited to small range of voltage. Wide input range virtually demands a switcher design. As the others have suggested you could use one of the prebuilt modules or you could try to build your own circuit using a switch mode controller chip. It is not too hard to build these if you are reasonably experienced with electronics.
