I don't know if the old micromouse competition is still running but they were always good,the idea being to build a robot that can find its way round a maze in the shortest time,you have two runs,one is a slow exploring run,the second is a fast run throught he optimum route.The ones I saw where quite sophisticated with gyros and rare earth motors.
