Yes, the 'paste & gun' method works very well on all kinds of surface mounted devices. Not so good for fine-pitch IC's though. It's quite difficult to spread the stuff evenly, which means some pins might get bridged by solder while others may not be soldered at all.

Oh, by the way: By "heat gun" we do not mean the kind you use to strip paint ;-)
