I have used the 7660 chip in similar way. It can invert the +12 to -12. With proper capacitor selection you could anticipate a current over 35 mA. If you need -5 as well use a second 7660 to invert the +5 to -5 volts. This chip is attractive for low current usage and requires no shotty diode or inductor like the higher current levels offered by some of the switched mode controller chips.
