Sounds like you've had some trouble in the past and have a lot of hard won insight.

I think the specification for the quality of the generator should drive the design. I believe this thread started as a simple function generator.

If a lot of outboard hardware (did i hear 555's, and 2716 eprom?) is going to be suggested then why not just implement the many ready to go integrated function generators, from exar, maxim, and intersil.

As a '51 message board i don't think ucontroller based DCO's should be so lightly written off. I have implemented many DCO's as this is not a "rogue" technique.

While a great deal of care (as you indicate) is required, the results can be wonderful.
