But the surplus mask ROM chips are nice for doing experiments. When the chip costs less than $0.5 (retail), you don't have to worry about damaging an expensive chip.

I use Siemens C501 chips ($0.40 each) and surplus EPROMs from the mid eighties for a lot of things... If you make a mistake you just fix it and install new chips. If the chip had cost me $20 (which is the approx. retail cost of many of the ISP chips) that could get expensive quickly... ;-)
