DAC +Power amp +greatly increased complexity + increased power dissipation.

You can't drive a 2kW drive from a 12 bit DAC !

Linear control is sometimes unavoidable, but the dual supply scheme I mentioned before significantly reduces the power dissipation in the regulators.
