Even without the safety issue, Charles' circuit is pretty lousy when you want to feed your circuit from the external source while simultaneously charge the battery, which Ayman wants to do. It puts three diodes and a resistor in series with the supply voltage, so that's 1.8V + (47 times the supply current) wasted.
