How about using I2C? For the price of two I/O pins you can add up to eight port expanders such as the PCF8574 (8-bit)from Philips. There is a bit of a down side with the software overhead, but for peripherals that do not require instant access or response these work quite well.
If you do a search on this forum on 8255 you will quickly learn that it is not well thought of.
