By now you must be convinced that this tape buisness is a non starter.

Still if you want to pursue this, then there is one method which I have used years back - just for the fun of it with an 8085 processor.

I am not sure about the magnetisation issues but what I did was this: It was based on frequency difference - a 1200Hz meant a "0" and 2400Hz meant a "1". This way there was some semblance of reliability as I could set a wide window for each frequency. Then you had the header consisting of "0" for a particular time and things of that sort. Could download and upload with a cheap cassette recorder.

But then my dad was feeding me and I had all the time in the world. Things are different now - sigh..
