thanks for the answers so far. So it's confirmed that JTAG si the only way to programm cygnal chips, at least the first time.

I wanted to avoid buying the dev board, since I've already my (own) one and I'm a hobbyist...

Didn't see the cable alone was available, an interesting thing though since it gives live debugging also.
Maybe I'll give it a try.
