My general understanding of this topic is kind off re-confirmed by your replies :

1. There is no specific tool for software testing.

2. The test procedure must be able to bring out hardware bugs, coding blunders, and interface issues.

3. It is something that is discussed with the client and implemented for each project, with respect to its adequacy and coverage.
