As far as the stopping is concerned, I did indeed see the problem of releasing the enable too soon, and I inserted the delay just as you did. The motors I am using have a very low holding torque and also very low detent torque, while this makes them "sissy" motors, they don't have the choppy look of other more "manly" steppers.
