How many years want you work on it ?
Have you any experience on writing your own Ethernet driver ?

In my opinion its really not a project to start on developing hardware and software. Its for gurus only.
But such gurus want never ask 8051 guys.

We are now also try to use Ethernet. But we buy a complete Ethernet module. And we have an Ethernet guru (not me) to program it.
I'm the guru, which read the bus and timing specifications and build the connections to the 8051.
