I don't know if this is exactly true or not, but I was told of some tank ranging system that paints a target with a laser spot and a camera system measures the diameter of the spot to determine target range. None of that fancy time-of-flight or phase stuff. I am not familiar enough with optics to know if this is a realistic approach or not.
