I have a suggestion regarding the glitches you observe on some of the pins. Check the assembly output of your compiler. If it changes your port pins by using a Read-Modify-Write instruction like ORL, ANL, or XRL then it could cause a condition referred to in the DS89C420 Revision A2 Errata sheet.
