The today CMOS 80C51 has TTL compatible inputs and CMOS compatible outputs.

So it can work with any common logic family together except ECL. And also with the 4000 series at VCC <= 5V only.

So your problems with C and LS series has nothing to do with the 80C51 device.

Maybe you can show us the whole schematic to find the fault.
