Don't throw more complexity at this project than you NEED. An LDO will do the job nicely. A decent bridge driver chip will do the motor control for you.

KEEP IT SIMPLE STANLEY.

I have seen DOZENS of robotics projects fail because they went to complex and too unreliable.
