This discussion has come up before.

There was a similar trend in the US about 8->10 years ago where there was a reluctance to move to 3.3V designs. But I think more and more that 3.3V designs are becoming the mainstream. Don't get me wrong...there are also still plenty of 5V designs too.

The movement to 3.3V power supplies is not at all unlike the changes in other parts of this electronics and computer business. For example when Windows first came from Microsoft there was a huge resistance from many many engineers to not give up DOS. But now most engineers are using Windows. Another example was when CPLDs beyond the simple PALs first appeared there was a large contingent of engineers that continued to fill designs with handfulls of 74HCxx logic chips for glue logic. But now most engineers have at least tried and designed in a CPLD as the glue logic even using them to replace latches and buffer parts. And finally I have noticed another one in the design of CPLDs and FPGAs. Many a die hard hardware engineer does their designs for a CPLD using schematic entry. But now more and more are finally moving over to using some form of HDL.

The 3.3V wave is moving....got a surfboard? :-)
