If you use Linux, try Kate. I just started using it as a notepad replacement when I upgraded from Windows to Linux; just for quick editing. Now I use it for everything that doesn't require a word processor. Editing HTML, PHP, 8052 code, whatever.

I'm sure there are editors that can do more, but Kate does everything I need and came preinstalled with RedHat Linux.
