I fully agree to your statements. In my work I follow a semi auto routing, i.e., after auto placement I readjust the placement manually to suit my requiremnt and same goes for routing. However, I do this only for high component density circuits as the manual work involved is quite considerable it is not worth doing for low component count PCB.

Lastly, there is no such a thing like totally "auto". All the CAD software requires some form of manual interaction (inputs) in getting a professionally done PCB. It is a wrong notion that "auto routing" means "fire and forget".
