Serial ADC vs parallel ADC is just a method of controlling the device and retrieving the data. On a parallel ADC, this is done through a parallel bus, a serial device uses a serial bus for that purpose. Thus, generally speaking, a serial device requires less I/O lines than its parallel counterpart.
There are some standards for the serial communication protocols like I2C and SPI so there is no such thing as THE serial protocol for ADC. If you require detailed information, check the datasheet for a particular device. The Maxim site has a nice device selection utility from where you can download the datasheets immediately. |
