I suppose sdcc isnt really a beginers tool as it doesnt have any example code or tutorials,but the manual is pretty extensive and with the help of a decent C programming book you should be able to work it out.
As far as using some code someone else sends you i always feel its pretty pointless as a learning experiance,the only way to learn is to do it yourself.
